Skydiving coach loosened harness to commit suicide during tandem jump: cops

An experienced skydiver who fell to his death during a tandem jump in Maine intentionally loosened his harness in midair to commit suicide, state police said. Brett Bickford, 41, of Rochester, New Hampshire, died on Sept. 27 after detaching himself about a mile above the ground during a two-man jump at Skydive New England in Lebanon.  More…

Woman impaled while trying to climb fence at US-Mexico border

A mother attempting to climb over a fence on the US-Mexico border fell and was impaled on a steel bar in front of her children, officials said. The 26-year-old woman from Guatemala pierced her side and buttocks when she landed on pieces of rebar Friday night near the San Ysidro Port of Entry, in San Diego.  More…

Utah man is state’s first rabies death in 74 years

A Utah man who caught bats and let his wife play with them, died of rabies — the first death of its kind in the state in 74 years. Gary Giles, 55, first began having neck and back pain on Oct. 19 and doctors thought he’d just pulled a muscle.  More…

Texas state lawmaker wins re-election from his jail cell

A member of the Texas Legislature currently serving a one-year jail sentence for allowing prohibited solicitation of his law firm celebrated a re-election win Tuesday behind bars. State Rep. Ron Reynolds, D-Missouri City, ran unopposed in Texas’ House District 27 and earned more than 45,000 votes in the election.  More…

Judge tosses $5 million suit over McDonald’s Quarter Pounder with Cheese

A $5 million lawsuit brought about by two McDonald’s customers in Florida was thrown out last week by U.S. District Judge William Dimitrouleas, granting a motion filed by McDonald’s. Judge Dimitrouleas dismissed the lawsuit last Friday “with prejudice,” Miami Herald reported, meaning the plaintiffs are not allowed to file the lawsuit again at a later date.  More…
