Capping an extraordinary case that defined American sporting life, Bryant last night released a document that might be considered the most bizarre of all the documents collected in the sexual assault charges against him. In one very pained paragraph, he all but drew his accuser close and gave her one final hug.
Kobe Bryant's Statement: ""First, I want to apologize directly to the young woman involved in this incident. I want to apologize to her for my behavior that night and for the consequences she has suffered in the past year. Although this year has been incredibly difficult for me personally, I can only imagine the pain she has had to endure. I also want to apologize to her parents and family members, and to my family and friends and supporters, and to the citizens of Eagle, Colo.

I also want to make it clear that I do not question the motives of this young woman. No money has been paid to this woman. She has agreed that this statement will not be used against me in the civil case. Although I truly believe this encounter between us was consensual, I recognize now that she did not and does not view this incident the same way I did. After months of reviewing discovery, listening to her attorney, and even her testimony in person, I now understand how she feels that she did not consent to this encounter.

I issue this statement today fully aware that while one part of this case ends today, another remains. I understand that the civil case against me will go forward. That part of this case will be decided by and between the parties directly involved in the incident and will no longer be a financial or emotional drain on the citizens of the state of Colorado."

Let's be perfectly honest on one point about this trial. Nobody can remain anonymous in this day and age. If the Eagle County DA thought they could hide the alleged accuser's identity he is sadly mistaken.
· Timeline in Kobe Bryant Case. These are the key events involving the arrest of Laker star Kobe Bryant on allegations he sexually assaulted a 19-year-old Eagle woman.
· Celebrity changes dynamic of the Bryant case. Her privacy, which was nearly impossible to protect in a town of 3,000 residents and one main public high school, is gone. Her name - first, middle and last - is on the Internet. So are her home address, her e-mail address, her phone number, her family's property records and two color photographs of her with her high school dance team and at the prom.
· Accuser a well known basketball groupie? According to Newsweek, a number of NBA players have said Bryant’s accuser, a college student and former high-school cheerleader, is well known as a basketball groupie.
· Bryant's accuser should now expect to be the accused. As Los Angeles Lakers superstar Kobe Bryant gears up for the defensive play of his life, experts said Sunday that the 19-year-old woman who says he raped her must brace herself for a well-financed, highly sophisticated smear campaign.
· Plea for privacy made in Kobe case. The mother of the alleged victim in the Kobe Bryant sexual-assault case has asked her daughter's friends to stop talking with reporters, but not before the woman's purported picture and her address, phone number and e-mail address began circulating on the Internet.
· Kobe's accuser recently OD'd on drugs. The Colorado woman who has accused Kobe Bryant of sexual assault overdosed on pills and was rushed to a hospital two months before the alleged incident with Bryant, one of her close friends told the Orange County Register.
· DA knew of an alleged overdose. Hurlbert huddled with the alleged victim's family the morning after he learned of the incident with pills, which friends said Monday were nonprescription.
· Accuser says Kobe can keep his money. Kobe Bryant's accuser got "sick" to her stomach watching the hoops superstar weepily deny on national TV that he raped her - and she doesn't want his money, just a jail sentence for him, a close pal said.
· Bryant accuser's injuries 'obvious.' "Her parents are afraid for her because she's received threats," said one family friend who asked not to be identified. "They've kind of asked everyone to step back a little bit and let things cool off."
· No anonymity for Bryant's alleged victim. The tall 19-year-old blond had hoped her voice would be her conduit to fame. Instead, a sexual assault accusation against basketball superstar Kobe Bryant has propelled her into the spotlight - at least in this community of 3,700 people.
· Kobe scores spin win. Los Angeles Lakers superstar Kobe Bryant -- appearing vulnerable, remorseful and most of all innocent -- pleaded his case to America in what lawyers and spin doctors Saturday called a brilliantly orchestrated opening salvo in his battle against sexual assault charges.
· Tearful Kobe Bryant says he's innocent of sexual assault charge. His voice quavering, his eyes wet with tears, Los Angeles Lakers superstar Kobe Bryant clutched his wife's hand tightly and declared that he did not sexually assault a 19-year-old woman at a Colorado resort.
· Accuser had dreams of being a star. The former high school cheerleader, 19, works the front desk at the exclusive resort where Bryant was a guest last week. She was an aspiring "American Idol" contestant who friends said "wanted to be a star."
· Open records battle waged in court. A sealed envelope to containing three reports regarding two incidents on Faber: "They're sealed because they have nothing to do with the investigation, but it would do irreparable harm if the documents were revealed," Sands told reporters after the hearing. "They are of a highly sensitive nature. You would understand if the documents were revealed."
· Kobe's case has marketers nervous. Ad Age magazine is reporting that Nike, McDonald's and other companies that have a commercial relationship with Kobe Bryant, are keeping a low profile in the wake of his sexual assault charges for the time being.
